The Wizard of Oz hanging myth has haunted me since I was a little boy, but I'm sure it has been around for much longer. It likely started when it came out on VHS in the '80's and people could rewind it again and again.
My friends and I would pause it on the vcr and hit the "frame" button on the remote control so the scene inched by, frame by frame. Honest, it sort of scared the crap out of me. The imaginations of 11 years old is nothing to underestimate. It truly does appear that as Dorthy and friends skip along the the yellow brick road, and the scene comes to an end, there is a munchkin that hops off of some platform and sways rapidly in midair, almost as if being hung.
The Wizard of Oz hanging myth goes something like this: During the casting of the film, there was this highly sensitive little person who wanted nothing more than to get the part of one of the munchkins in the film. Well, things didn't quite turn out his way, and to go out in blazing glory he decided to commit suicide while the camera was on him, but far enough in the distance so it wouldn't be noticed until after the film was released.
This my friends is pure crap!
Check out this video brought to us by JoeDeafPreacher:
It's a crane! A freaking crane!
This one's not as freaky as the ghost in 3 men and a Baby though.
The Wizard of Oz Hanging Myth. Die a slow death.
